Instagram Stories has become an effective way to engage with users aged 18 to 29[1] with 500 million accounts using them every day. A popular feature of Stories is the AR filters that either alter your image or are interactive. Brands have discovered and are starting to jump on the bandwagon for creating custom filters to reach and engage with a wider audience.

What’s an Instagram AR filter? 

Augmented Reality (AR) filters are computer-generated effects layered over the real-life image your camera displays. In Instagram Stories, an AR filter alters the image your front or back camera displays and is an interactive element. These are different to Instagram’s pre-set filters which elevate the quality of photos in one click, so you don’t need to spend lots of time editing photos.

Originally introduced in 2017, Instagram were the only one making them, that was until 2018 when they opened it up to the public. Since then, the creation of filters has exploded, from simple designs such as a beauty filter for selfies to branded interactive filters that quiz you or let you play a game.

Collaboration For a Cause 

Word of Mouth Agency was approached by R U OK to create their official Instagram AR filter for R U OK Day 2022. The message this year is for Australians to understand that they don’t need to be an expert to ask R U OK?, and that conversations can help someone feel better about themselves and their situation, whether facing something big or small.  

The design had to align with this year’s assets and be interactive. Using your face in frame, the heading “I’m an expert in” was then prompted with a fast scroll through job titles and then landed on “Asking R U OK?” with the bottom pop-up of “No qualifications needed”.  

Our superstar graphic designer, Lucas Faim, got to work on the design concept and worked alongside web builder and programming wizard, Shawn Flett, to produce a simple yet sleek design. In-house testing by the WOM team and some minor edits later, the final product was produced and launched on R U OK?’s Instagram as their official 2022 filter.
